Sir William George Armstrong, Baron Armstrong of Cragside (1810-1900) is chiefly remembered as an immensely successful Victorian industrialist who established one of the world's greatest armaments, shipbuilding, and engineering businesses, based on Tyneside. Much of his fame also derives from the revolutionary system of field artillery which he developed in the 1850's. He had other accomplishments, however, including those of research scientist, landscape gardener, and naturalist. He was also a notable philanthropist and contributed huge sums to education, medicine, scientific research organizations, and charities. Peter McKenzie's biography is a comprehensive and easy-to-read account of Armstrong's life. His narrative gains in significance by the inclusion of background historical information about the areas in which Armstrong was most active: Electrical Research, Hydraulic Engineering, Ordnance, and Shipbuilding. The story is given additional scale by being set against a description of the dynamic scientific, social, and political landscape in which Armstrong lived out his long life.
